[Lista ArNOG] IPv6 en ISP - /48 o /56

Personally, I think this is ill advised. If giving a /48 to every end site served will use up all your space, then you have obviously obtained too small a block from the RIR and should go back and ask for either a larger block or an additional block (depending on the extent of your deployment of the existing block).

To the best of my knowledge, every RIR supports fairly liberal IPv6 requests and /32 is only the MINIMUM recommended size for an ISP, not some sort of limit.

Indeed, even relatively small ISPs in the ARIN region easily qualify for at least a /28 if they want to. I suspect LACNIC policy might be slightly more restrictive, but I’m quite sure you can still get enough to give every end site served and still have plenty of space for growth.

/48 is much better than /56… GIve /48s to EVERYONE.

There is no advantage whatsoever to giving /56 to residential customers.

It complicates your network management and your numbering plan and it will negatively impact innovation.

Further, I recommend rounding each of the categories in your plan to a nibble boundary.

The plan you presented, I would redo as follows:

Internal: /38 seems fine as is, but I would round up to /36
ADSL Residential: 150,000 users = 18 bits, round up to 20 bits. 48-20 = /28 needed.
(2^18 = 262,144, 2^20 = 1,048,576)

ADSL Commercial: No change needed.

Direct Ethernet: This is a small enough group of users, that I would carve a /32 out of the end of the /28 for the ADSL residential customers.

Mobile: I would actually reserve enough for a /48 per smart phone in planning this. While today’s smart phones are only capable of a shared /64 between the uplink and the local tethered devices, the development efforts and future roadmaps all look like phones and other mobile devices will become more full-featured routers and simply be yet another onramp to global routing for a wide variety of locally connected devices. As such, treating them like home gateways makes much more sense from a future-proofing perspective than treating them as today’s handsets.

So instead of a /48, I would actually plan another /28 for them. (2^18 needed, rounded up to a nibble = 2^20).

So, instead of a /31, you really should be looking at /36 + /28 + /32 + 0 + /28 = /27 + /32 + /36, which rounded to a nibble boundary = /24.

My recommendation would be to apply for a /24 on this basis. I don’t know if current LACNIC policies will support this. If not, you may have to give up the nibble-boundary round-ups (the rest will still be within policy).

If you don’t do nibble boundary round-ups, then you’ll need a /38+/30+/32+/35+/30 = /29+/32+/35+/38 = /28

So at an absolute minimum, you should get at least a /28 if you cannot get the /24.

Hola.

The idea of /56 for residential absolution is in opposition to what I have said in the past and will continue to say.

Please give /48s to everyone. There’s just no reason not to.

Hola Ariel

No entendí pq me voy a quedar corto.
